Around When Walt Came to a Halt
In the second half of 2017, a new friend was made, by coincidence.
In the often shared space of inner-city warehouses, it wasn’t surprising to be passing by two fellows sharing cheese and wine and playing backgammon. Conviviality lends itself to making acquaintances. It was almost three years after my oldest friend had departed and the new friend seemed to turn up just at the right time, or was it that I had turned up? Also around that time, another regular in my life, went. He’d been about during the teenage years in the seventies and when I spun records at a dinner dance venue, early ’77—parquet floor and floor to ceiling mirrored wall—through the radio days and beyond. The following was written spontaneously, heartfelt, after the news Steely Dan’s, Walter Becker, had evanesced.
